How to pack Heavy machinery parts to Avoid Damage during transportation?

1. Pre-Part Inspection & Preparation

  • Clean all parts to remove dust, oil, rust and debris; apply anti-rust oil/film to metal surfaces, especially machined edges and bearing areas.

  • Cover threaded holes, shafts, flanges and precision surfaces with plastic caps or protective tapes to prevent scratches and dents.

  • Label fragile, precision and vulnerable components separately.

2. Packaging Material Selection

  • Main container: Use thick plywood crates, solid wooden cases or heavy-duty steel frames (for ultra-heavy parts). Avoid thin cardboard.

  • Cushioning: Deploy foam blocks, rubber pads, corrugated paper, wooden braces or inflatable airbags. Fill gaps completely to stop shifting.

  • Binding materials: Use steel bands, heavy-duty nylon straps and tensioners; add anti-slip rubber mats at the crate bottom.

3. Classification & Internal Fixing

  • Separate packing: Split large assemblies into individual parts if possible; pack small fittings (bolts, gaskets) in sealed plastic bags and fix them inside the crate.

  • Firm bracing: Use custom wooden supports to clamp irregular-shaped parts. Ensure no collision between components.

  • Weight distribution: Place heavy parts at the bottom, light parts on top; keep the center of gravity low and centered.

4. Special Protection for Key Parts

  • Shafts & long components: Use end supports to prevent bending; wrap with soft cloth + hard outer guards.

  • Glass, gauges & fragile accessories: Double-pack with foam, mark FRAGILE clearly.

  • Paint-coated surfaces: Cover with felt or bubble wrap to prevent abrasion.

  • Hydraulic/pneumatic parts: Seal ports tightly to keep out dust and moisture.

5. Crate Sealing & Outer Marking

  • Nail and reinforce wooden crates fully; reinforce corners and edges with metal angle irons.

  • Spray/stick standard shipping marks: Heavy Load, Do Not Drop, Keep Upright, Moisture Proof, weight and center of gravity marks.

  • Add waterproof tarpaulin or plastic wrapping outside crates for sea/long-distance transport.

6. Loading & Transit Reminders

  • Use professional lifting tools (forklift, crane) matching part weight; lift at designated lifting points only.

  • Stack crates reasonably; avoid overstocking or placing light packages under heavy ones.

  • For long-haul/sea freight, add desiccant inside crates to resist humidity.
